A few weeks ago I found these two strangers from a foreign land (you guessed it at the car boot...) I loved them instantly they are made of wood and I have no idea what they are, they have a small indentation at the top but are not hollow any ideas ?

A few weeks later my other half and I were mooching around the age concern charity shop

when my husband saw this little lady at the back of the shelf. I was overjoyed I couldn't believe we had found another one.It certainly earned my husband some brownie points.

I took her home and reunited her with her family, how sweet are they. I wonder how many more of them are out there ?

  5. What a lovely, lovely family, and such a sweet story of how you are uniting them! I do hope you find more... I would guess that they are from southern India or Sri Lanka - any other suggestions?

  6. Hi Karen, thankyou for visiting my blog. Gosh what a delightful "find" you and your hubby have had. I have seen similar ones here in my local area in Australia. A man and his wife were making them...the husband made the shapes from timber and his wife painted them. Their's were all along "English" lines though e.g. ladies and soldiers from a bygone era.
    Kind Regards

  9. Hi, Karens,
I am not sure what they are, but they sure are cute, aren't they? It looks like you have a good start on a collection. It will be a lot of fun to see if you can add to it and find some others. Thanks for stopping by Bunny Cottage. Have a happy rest of the week. Vicki

  11. are they candle holders? I have a short wooden doll that is a bit like them with a hole in the top, I always assumed it was for a little candle?

I thought at fist they might be cork/bottle tops but it sounds like they are made to be their own thing...

  15. Hi Karen,

Thanks for popping by my blog.

What a lovely find! I thought they might be skittles or something like that, but then, it would be a shame to send them reeling all over the place, so perhaps not!

  20. Hi Karen...stopped in for a visit! You have a nice blog and I enjoyed looking at all of your pictures.

The little dolls look like what I have heard called "Peasant Dolls", and are sometimes made from bit of wood, spools and spindles. Then hand painted.

Nice to meet you, look forward to getting to know you!
